String 101
How to Choose
Three things decide how a string plays: its material, its gauge (thickness), and the tension you string it at.
Type of String
Co-Poly (Polyester): control, spin, and durability with a firmer feel. Best for intermediate-to-advanced players: Solstice Power, Solstice Black, Elite XT, Pro X, Flash.
Multifilament: soft, powerful, gut-like comfort. Best for slower swings, comfort seekers, and arm care: Impulse, Dark Matter.
Monofilament: a comfortable, durable, responsive middle ground with easy power: Evolution.
Synthetic Gut: the softest, most classic feel at the friendliest price, and a great true entry-level pick: SG Ultra.
String Thickness
Thinner strings bite the ball for more spin, feel, and power, but wear out faster. Thicker strings last longer and add control.
Not sure? 16L (1.25mm) is the do-everything gauge most players start with.
How Tight to String
Lower tension = more power, more comfort, a livelier string bed.
Higher tension = more control and precision, with a firmer response.
Most players live in the 48–58 lb range. Drop a few pounds for power, add a few for control.
Mix & Match
A hybrid uses one string in the mains and another in the crosses, blending their strengths: the spin and control of a poly with the comfort of a softer string.
